Now that the team has reached their $10,000 fundraising goal, they’ve released the last two episodes of their second season of Sleepfall er, I mean Freefall, to the non-donating public.
For all those not in the know, filmmaker Lamont Pierre played Speaker of the House John Boehner and “shutdown” the series until he got the budget he wanted. Extortion aside, I supported this move and I think it should have been implemented even earlier.
Its a shame that this gay series with a decent sized fan base needed 4 months to raise only $10k from 475 donations. By comparison, the black heterosexual web series with a similarly sized fan base, The Couple, raised over $32,000 in only 30 days from 477 donations. And they did it without needing to hold episodes hostage.
Its no secret that I’m not a fan of the series, but I respect the hustle. Its hard out here for a gay pimp.
One of our loyal little brothers here at Cypher Avenue had already snuck these two private episodes to us weeks ago but I only skimmed them since the show is just so fucking boring. Real talk. I’ve told the filmmakers this directly in private messages. I’d even say it to their faces. This shit is depressing and boring. And the writing, acting and green tint sucks. I want…no, I need my fellow gay brothers to do better. We all need to do better.
I want to support dope shit. I wish Freefall was dope. I really do. There’s hardly any black gay work out there that is ‘dope.’ Consider this quote from Kanye West’s infamous BBC Radio One interview:
“For me, first of all, dopeness is what I like the most. Dopeness. People who want to make things as dope as possible. And, by default, make money from it. The thing that I like the least are people who only want to make money from things whether they’re dope or not. And especially make money at making things as least dope as possible.” – Kanye West
Speaking of making things as least dope as possible: Here are the final two episodes of Sleepfall… Night night, insomniacs…

Story stuff aside I will say when I saw these on Vimeo a few weeks ago…It did look amazing. I can’t even hate on that. Don’t know what was going on in the episodes, but they looked amazing at least. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Freefall’s fundraising with The Couple though. Black and Sexy TV has a huge following, Kaldrick King, Issa Rae, and other people behind them. Also, The Couple’s highest rated episode has 200 thousand viewers…FreeFall’s has 60 thousands viewers so the funding will be skewed. Not defending Free Fall, but Black and Sexy is an amazing machine on the verge. Band Of Artists is much smaller in comparison.
Excuses are for losers.
I’m just putting things in perspective. Although I did raise 10,000 in 30 days for my short film. But that was different lol.
LOL DAMN @nick! Sleepfall??? hahahahah
But yeah I hope that the $10K will bring about better things. I don’t want my money going to waste! #supportdopeness
I find it hard to believe that these directors/producers can’t find viable acting talent anywhere in Atlanta. I mean does Atlanta not having any theater groups or university drama clubs that have students who could do 50 times better than this? It’s as if these guys were picked out from a club and hired to act. I’ve seen better acting in BreeditRaw videos.
I been trying to tell ya’ll it’s hard to find actors. A lot of black actors gay or straight are afraid to play gay for some reason. I know this from personal experience. They are afraid of being type cast as gay.
I could excuse the bad acting if the premise, writing and directing were better. Awkward Black Girl and the Black & Sexy TV web series have pretty mediocre acting but at least the stories and characters are engaging. Plus, they’re not BORING AS FUCK!
I really want to like this show also. I think that the best thing about the show right now is the actors. There has to be something about a show for me to watch it. For this show, truthfully, it’s the attractiveness of the actors. Most of them are nice looking guys. If it were the same show, with unattractive guys, I would not even waste my time. So kudos to them for that. My main problem with the show is that the storyline is hard to follow. Sometimes things will happen and it won’t be developed at all. For example, there was this one scene where this one dude raped this other dude. I thought there was going to be a developing storyline behind that. I was disappointed. I thought the guy was going to beat him or something. I think they had like one conversation about and the guy wasn’t even mad. I pretty much dumped the show after that.
If memory serves the rapist actually brought it up(because all rapists bring it up to their victims apparently) and Nico only remembered being knocked out. Rapist Chad was surprised Nico didn’t remember anything else and then changed the subject.
@Bpaisle
Come on man. You can’t just watch a program due to the attractiveness of the cast. So many posts here on CA have talked about how black gay men view things in mostly a physical or sexual light. Leaving out “Baywatch” you can’t sustain a show with beautiful bodies and bad acting/writing for long. I bet the creator is banking on gay black men supporting this web series based on the oiled up chiseled physiques.
The only time I even remotely found myself entertained was when the dude was maced in the face like a girl. LOL. Now that shit was funny.
I only watched because X was hot.
Was that the balding guy who whispered every one of his lines? LOL OK. So some of them were halfway attractive but damn, it would be easier to find pics of them online and stare at those than sit through this series. I tried it and can’t remember what happened from one episode to the next. I still don’t understand what happened at the end. Please explain.
Thats exactly what this creator is banking on! Clearly it isnt the script, acting, or ‘__________’ (pick one).
It’s been brought up a few times on here, how, there must not be any ‘average’ bodied/looking actors trying to catch a break in ATL. And while Id consider them an attractive cast overall, ur gonna have to cast Boris, Tyson, Omari, and the Rock, if u want me to even entertain the thought of watching the paint drying known as ‘Freefall’, or any other show where the attempt to draw viewers is only ‘eye candy’.
Yo!…1 time for my casting choices!!! Im a picky mofo but ev1 fuks w at least 2 of those dudes (even tho all 4 are dope)! Just sayin…
We’ll I didn’t really pay that much attention to it at first but once I found myself totally losing interest, I had to find something. Like I said, I wanted to like the show but I often found the storyline to be convoluted and hard to follow. So what was the alternative, just not watch it? There isn’t much black gay content to choose from as it is so I pretty much try and support everything, regardless of how bad it is. The attractiveness of the actors was just the one thing that kept me from totally dismissing this particular show. I do not watch all of them for this reason because frankly not all of the shows have attractive actors so I try and find things about each show to keep me watching.
I like the series and support however I was very disappointed in the last two episodes because it just seem as if the plot lacked focus and the acting wasn’t very good.I am glad that they received funding for a new season but I just hope that the writers and producers listen to some of the comments that are being written here and well as the comments on YouTube.I will say this though that the cast is gorgeous especially Tony who is my ultimate male crush.
I’m just glad they got the needed funds to continue! I’m a FREFALL Fan. There’s no other web-series like it out right now!Everybody gotta be different! 🙂
Terrific show. Wonderful vision. Amazing presentation of {Black} gay men. Nice thinking out-the-box. AND all this for close to no budget. On a regular television series a supporting actor makes about $35,000 per episode. “Freefall” makes an entire season (10 episodes) for $10K. GREAT JOB “Freefall”! Kudos to your creators, actors, crew and producers. I’m ready for season #2 and #3!
Whew, I am late to this party. I think I hear an echo as I type. But hey, I’m gonna say my piece. I like FreeFall. I probably should send them some money. It clearly does not have the quality of an HBO production…or maybe even UPN (they still have UPN?), but I kept watching until I saw all of season 1. Eye candy, check. Situations/struggles/purpose, check. More episodes, check. We can nitpick this series to death and have some real good reason too. Continuity and feasibility are problematic. Oh booboo, it is. Cam’s PIN# is 42-NINETY…TONY. And why is Oliver riding around in the back of a Chrysler 200 in Enterprise-Rental-white? Is that gangsta in the ATL? Its not here in Los Angeles. Come on now. And a $10,000 check for performing what service in a VERY cash-only business? (we didn’t think this through, now did we) And what did he do for 10 grand? They should’ve showed more of that. I’m curious. But it still kept my attention through the last episode. The word masculine makes my skin itch, I just like that they were mostly regular up-the-block dudes that I’d say hey to at house parties and starbucks. The relationships were “special” at best. None of those for me thankyouverymuch. But I’m glad Cam is alive, Niko is alive, Tyson is alive, X is alive, and Tony ain’t dead. I mean, all of their lives were at critical risk damn near. It’s all much ado. But i want more. So hey…bring it.
