Premiering on the OWN network; David Makes Man centers on a very intelligent 14yr old from the projects who is grappling with the death of his closest friend. He has to make a decision to embrace the streets or his education, which could provide a way out of poverty.
Between this show and The Chi, I can’t recall any other television drama that centered on a young Black teenage male with homosexual themes. It follows the same format as Tarell Alvin McCraney’s previous work (Oscar winner for Best Film) Moonlight. The network trailer does come off as Moonlight made for television mixed with a bit of Patrick Ian Polk. While the trailer is beautifully produced, it puts me in the mindset of “not another Black gay web-series”. Regardless, I will be watching it.
Check out the trailer and how Tarell Alvin McCraney pitched the show to Oprah below.

Black gay man is doing somethings out here. Not mad at him at all. In fact, just the opposite.
Congrats brother. I will definitely watch. :salute:
For OWN to pick it up, it must be beyond that typical. And with Phylicia Rashad hopping on, the acting is going to be elevated♂️
Who is gay on 'The Chi'?
<!—->agreed. and i dont think a yale grad playwright and macarthur fellow/"genius grant" recipient would make smthng of "about him" or "freefall" quality lol i just dont see that for him at all.
by the way, just watched his movie "high flying bird" and it was damn good.

Don't know if any character is gay or not (haven't seen the show). I misspoke (typed) and meant to say these are the only two drama shows centering around a pubescent – teenage Black male protagonist.
For some reason I feel like Snowfall doesn't fall in this category because 'Franklin' is 19.
I was a sucker for Moonlight so I’m ALL IN for this. Thanks for putting this on my radar!!!!
Yall. I went to the premier yesterday evening at the Black Film Festival. This pilot was amazing. It really lays out the toll that both physical and mental trauma has taken on black men. I think every dude on this site needs to at least sit for a single episode because it really speaks to our reality. Save the brother who really grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth, this show really has something for each intersection of black men.
Airs August 15th!!
<!—->i was at the festival too. i go every year. didnt know you lived in the area. would've reached out and we could've tag teamed some bottoms together lol
seriously i just watched the first episode this morning. the show is great and does some innovative and unexpected things in what otherwise could be a tired 'hood kid trying to make it out' genre. it's getting great reviews and very well deserved so far.

I just watched the first episode and I felt the anxiety. It does have a "moonlight" element but I feel it will offer more layers. I felt sad and blessed because although I didnt have that reality growing up I know of some people with similar stories of just having that constant struggle to overcome.
Yea bro, hit me next time you're down
