I usually avoid certain “urban themed” websites like they are infested with the plague. You know the websites that constantly feature black people acting a fool and fighting each other. So when a co-worker attempted to show me screen grabs of another video displaying black folks fighting on the train, I tried to look the other way accept this one was a little different. This video was of transgender women being harassed and subsequently attacked on the Marta transit in Atlanta, GA.
The short version of the events that transpired on May 20th 2014 according to the trans women; They’re chillin in the train station and waiting for the train, like normal folk usually do. Insecure dudes with something to prove allegedly begin to take pictures, harass and question the trans women, “is yall mens or womens” (Hey “straight” dudes, why do you care)? They all board the train and not only does the harassment continue but now there’s an audience. At this point, we no longer have to take the word of the trans women, why? Well in this technological day and age you know what happened next; folks pulled out their phones and begin filming, waiting for the situation to escalate like salivating dogs. The hungry dogs are thrown a juicy bone.
Insecure dude #1 Luther L. Thomas (who has now been arrested) takes a Solange flying kick at hits Janell Crosby. As the fight begins, Crosby’s friend Tyra Woods does her own version of a Solange flying elevator kick to defend her friend from a second assailant. During the scuffle Tyra loses her clothes. Yes we can see Janell mouthing off at the beginning of the video but in my opinion, I tend to believe the transgendered women were provoked based on some of the last words you hear Thomas say, “gay ass mutha fucka. you gay as fuck. gay ass bitch”!
A couple of things stood out in my mind when viewing the video. My first instinct was to say, “If the transgender women were being harassed, why didn’t anyone step in and help”? In my opinion, these women had no problem handling themselves. Good for them for being able to defend themselves like soldiers against these losers. I bet you they will not harass or attack another transgendered woman again; unless of course they are in a group and the gay or transgendered person is alone. For anti-LGBT jerks like this, they consider this a fair fight….pussies. Nonetheless I still understand what Janell and Tyra are saying in their interview. It would have felt great to have support from others on the train. That would have been a great YouTube or Cable News moment showing video footage of strangers coming to the defense of these women.
Another thing that I want to point out is that many progressives (black and white) on television, radio and online continue to claim that people in communities of color no longer care about homosexuality and the anti-LGBT tide is turning in a positive direction. I’m not saying I completely disagree with this; however my feeling is that the more things continue to progress or are out in the open, the more you will see people who resist and attack.
Take for example President Barack Obama. Since his run for office and re-election, more and more people are not ashamed to discuss publically their racist views. In my opinion it’s the same with LGBT issues. More and more people who are opposed to these individuals have no problem publically spewing their hateful and sometimes violent points of view. We read reports of LGBT people being attacked and see these types of videos just as much as we see footage of police brutalizing citizens. Can we be honest and say the black community is still dominated by and shackled to the black church and because of this, anti-LGBT views will be around for a long long time?
Regardless of one’s personal opposing views, no one deserves to be publically degraded and attacked simply for being different. Even though I don’t pretend to understand the struggle of the transgendered community, I support them, especially when they’re not harming anyone and just being themselves. Janell and Tyra, you have a right to defend yourself and please continue to punch and kick these fools in their faces.

Sorry, but this is what happens when you choose to walk outside your house in a dress and a wig. By putting on those skimpy clothes, bad wigs and pounds of makeup they are inviting the attention they attract. Not all that attention is going to be positive either. Sometimes its negative and unfortunately in this situation it became violent.

Yes, they deserved to get attacked on the train. They were practically asking for it by being themselves.
Victims of crimes like this should not be the ones who have to defend themselves for being who they are. “She was asking for it with the short skirt and strapless top.” isn’t a defense for a rape so why should the heavy makeup and wigs be an invite for a bash? Well, maybe not bash because they were holding their own but it’s still not a reason to kick someone out of the blue.
If these guys had just minded their business and didn’t bother these folks there would not have been an issue.

In @friedchicken defense, I don’t think he meant they shoulda got hemmed up. I think what he meant is, KNOWING how ig’nant (black) folk are, and how irrationally insecure (black) dudes tend to be, if one puts themselves in a position where they’re more likely to draw negative attention, then this type of situation is unfortunately to be expected. It’s not right at all, but it’s the unfortunate reality. No matter how masculine my mannerisms, appearance, overall aura may be, if Im on the 2 train in the heart of Flatbush (a.k.a. West Indian DL Homophobe Central) with another dude (even) just as masculine as I am, and we even showing an INKLING of PDA, SOME dude is gonna come out his face and start some shit. If I wanna be so with a dude Im with on a train with, then that’s just me (and him), why should we have to tone it down because some ig’nant ass dude might now wanna see it (stress on MIGHT, in most cases. While I am not a drag queen or transgendered person. I give them credit for being brave enough to live their truth, while a majority or black gay man want to remain closeted. They should not expect to be harassed or mistreated no more than any of us should. I’ve seen some drag queens in Atlanta that look better than most women but you would never catch them on a train. When you are in an enclosed environment with so called straight dudes (fresh out of county) and their boys they have to prove themselves. Glad nobody was killed or seriously hurt.

There’s always some crazy ass stuff happening on the Marta trains. And I thought the trains in STL were all the way live!!!!!
As a resident of the DC area, this is very reminiscent of when there was a string of attacks against transgenders in the Chinatown area here. In fact one woman was thrown through a store window, she almost died too.
The sad reality is that transgender violence is still a massive issue that is only going to get worse. Trans women and men combine what are the biggest perceived threats to the sexually insecure hypermasculine male: Gender nonconformity, pride in one’s alternative sexuality, and in many cases sexual appeal that contradicts one’s social upbringing. Just like how quite a few anti-gay politicians have been caught in bathrooms or hotels with other men, I’m willing to guess at least half of these violently anti-transgender individuals have at least thought about what it’d be like to be with one.
The best thing we can do about this is what you’re doing here: bringing awareness. It helps remind and inform people that the struggles trans men and women face for being themselves aren’t a simple punchline in a comedy, they are often real and tragic forms of harassment and violence.
To me the worst part of this was the poor girl literally losing her clothes fighting because she was trying to protect her transgendered friend. I literally watched this video with my hands on my head shocked. This sh*t ruined my day. Shameful. I glad those insecure punks got arrested.

Hell it look like the tyranny’s where the ones doing the attacking. The sad part is that people are just looking, laughing, and recording. This is a very good example of black people not growing as a people.
